Last night, at the B&B I was staying in, I met Sam Dempster, the husband of Marjorie Dempster, the poor woman I have been driving nuts with phone calls while I waited again to find out if the ferry was sailing to Labrador again. I am staying at Marjorie’s and Sam’s home and B&B. Sam is this wonderful guy, with a strong handshake and ready smile, a fisherman and someone I instantly liked. Sam is why I was up and out at 5 AM this morning, the guy who told me where to find Moose . . . and he was sooooo correct . . . I found the first moose of the day five minutes after leaving thier driveway . . . and then 18 more before 7 AM!! Oh . . . and a dozen caribou as well! Sam is a genius!!
Darn Flash! Hard to get a good photo in the near dark with moving mountains of fur without it though! I believe the bigger of the three on the right is a pregnant female, and calfing season should be starting soon!Of the nineteen moose I saw today, this one is showing the side I saw the most of . . . the back side! LOL Moose are, as I found out this morning, very cagy and even though they seem to like standing on the sides of roads, they do not like headlights or cars. They will usually move rapidly for cover when approached. Even if you approach them slowly, they still head for the hills when a car door opens. I was lucky with these six. I WILL keep looking for more!!I loved this Caribou!! It was the only one today that did not seem to be instantly terrified when my car approached. It was munching grass, and only seemed interested in continuing to munch grass, even as I parked, exited my car and cautiously approached to take this photo . . . but I could not get it to look up. I tried calling it (don’t ask!), I clapped my hands, I even whistled at it . . . munch, munch, munch . . . nothing! But then, when I turned to walk away . . . it looked up!! Ha . . . got it!! Silly Caribou!!
I looked for moose and caribou as long as I could this morning, but at some point I had to return to the ferry terminal what I envisioned was going to be a three-ring circus. The weather had been backing up travelers in Newfoundland for three days, many who had slept in thier cars or trucks in the cold.
